2008-03-06: I give up. I've now turned off the ability for others to create an account. It seems that spammers have now automated the email verification step as well. If you want an account to do uploads or fixes, you'll now have to email me directly. Because of this, it's now almost certain that nobody is going to contribute new things to this Wiki. Once again... Sorry, guys! --bcwhite

2007-05-08: I just turned off guest editing and page creation. I was spending more time rolling back stuff from spam bots than anything else. Unfortunately, that vastly increases the number of steps someone has to do before they can add or correct information. I wanted to avoid that because I know most people won't take that kind of trouble for those small but important edits. Sorry, guys! --bcwhite

2007-01-10: Moved site from server in my basement to MidPhase for more reliable service (I'm going to be away from home for months and then am moving to Switzerland). DON'T USE MIDPHASE (now AN-Hosting) FOR ANYTHING!!! Go here for why MidPhase/ANH sucks. I think once I get stable again I'll move it back to my basement. --bcwhite

2006-11-03: 6 hours to upgrade the disks in a software RAID! And all because I couldn't get the system to boot off the second disk. I've written what I learned about Software RAID Disk Upgrades on the new Software RAID page. What should be a simple procedure can be a nightmare if you forget one simple item. --bcwhite

2006-09-26: I've moved this site from my previous company to my new company: RiverWorth Systems. This is actually my own personal company, hosted on my own personal server, for my own personal interests. Or, to be brief, there is nothing there! (yet!) Perhaps one day I'll be able to create a company under that name with the same quality and ideals as Fog Creek (owned and run by Joel of Joel On Software fame). If you're not familiar with JoelOnSoftware, it's worth a look. --bcwhite

2006-05-24: I "ported" the LDAP Authentication How-To I had just written and posted to the Samba mailing list. It took two days, mostly because I expanded upon it and changed the format to suit a hyperlinked document. LinuxWiki has it's first document! --bcwhite

2006-05-23: I installed MediaWiki via Subversion and within 20 minutes had a functioning Wiki! I don't think I've ever encountered a program, even a simple one, that was as easy to install and configure as MediaWiki (and that includes those already packaged for my distribution). Kudos, guys! --bcwhite

2006-05-22: Over the past week, I've struggled to upgrade my company (Precidia Technologies) servers to use LDAP as back-end authentication common to both Linux and Windows (via Samba). It was a chore. I consulted over a dozen "HOWTO" documents and did countless Google searches for information. It isn't that the information isn't out there; it's just that it's not all in one place. I found some here, some there, and more somewhere else. Some of it was out-of-date and would work partially. Worst of all, though, was that it was all static! I had no way of contributing the knowlege I was gaining on those points in that location. I posted my own HOWTO that will join the many already out there and going out of data. I love the WikiPedia concept and figure the same could be applied to documentation. --bcwhite
